Apology Letter to Boss for Uninformed Leave

By | December 8, 2014

Taking time off from work is fairly well but not informing your boss is not! If circumstances were against you and you were unable to ask for a leave, you may consider writing an apology letter the minute circumstances allow you to.

Taking an uninformed leave can put a very bad impression on your employer or supervisor. You may be branded non-professional or careless which is not good especially if there is an upcoming appraisal. If you have been sick or been in an accident due to which you did not get a chance to inform your boss, it may not be your fault but you must still apologize. Why should you apologize if it wasn’t your fault? Well, your boss may have been depending on you to get some work done or may have lost business due to your absence so an apology at the very least is in order here.

You can write an apology letter to your boss along the lines of the sample letter given below.

Dear Ms. Cooper:

As you know I have taken an uninformed leave from work on 10 and 11 May. I apologize for not being able to inform you about the reason of absence but circumstances did not allow me to inform you timely.

On the night of May 8, I was faced a car accident that rendered me unconscious. I was taken to Midway Street Hospital and remained in a medically induced coma for 2 days. When I woke up, I had no memory of what had happened and only found out when the doctor informed me about my condition.

You are aware of the fact that I moved to Darien from Norwalk a year ago and live alone which is why the hospital staff was not able to contact my family (the only surviving member of my family is my sister who is on a four week hike and cannot be reached through phone). Had these circumstances not transpired, someone would have informed you that I won’t be coming in (and the reason why) and saved you the trouble of wondering where I was and subsequently having to juggle my customers.

I have enclosed the doctor’s report with this letter. I will be in touch with the HR department to ask for formal leave so that I can recover fully before I rejoin work. I apologize once again for taking uninformed leaves.

Sincerely,

(Signature)
