Request for Promotion Letter Sample

By | November 5, 2014

So now that you have achieved much at work following a rigorous five-year term working in the same position, it is time to ask for a promotion.

Promotion requests are awkward because you are asking for a raise in status and pay based on how you perceive you have done.

While your perception may be correct, it is still coming from you so it may feel a bit uncomfortable requesting a promotion.

However, if you feel that you deserve a promotion, don’t be shy in asking for it.

To make sure that your promotion request is taken seriously, write a letter to your supervisor.

Your supervisor is more than likely to know most about your achievements and can help you.

Let us discuss how a request for promotion letter should be written.

Once you have introduced yourself, you can either ask for a promotion before you detail why you are eligible for one or the other way around.

It depends on how well your supervisor knows you – if you are writing a letter to someone under whom you may have worked but who is not closely involved in any projects that you have been a part of, you may need to provide details of your eligibility before you ask for a promotion.

This letter sample will tell you how you can ask for a promotion:

Re: Promotion Request

Dear Mr. McMillan:

The five years that I have spent working as a Communications Officer at Hack Rector have made me what I am today – my successes in handling communications and marketing projects are solely due to the training and opportunities that I have been provided with at this company.

I believe that I have performed consistently over the previous five years, and my contribution to DocuMate was quite substantial. DocuMate was one project that tested my abilities and skills in communications quite harshly, and I am confident that I did justice to it as the success of the project suggests.

Having worked at this position for so long, I believe that I am now nearing a saturation point. While I love my work, I feel that there is so much more than I have, which I can contribute to Hack Rector if I am in a higher position than I am right now. I have never been afraid of responsibilities, and I have always been successful in meeting even the tightest of deadlines, both of which make me an excellent contender for a Communications Manager position at Hack Rector. Since I will be working my way up as opposed to merely being hired at that position, I am positive that I will be able to contribute significantly.

I would appreciate it if you would take out the time to review my request. My supervisor, Mr. Gibson, will vouch for my dependability and eligibility for a managerial position.

Thank you very much for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,

John Cole
