Sample Request Letter for Financial Assistance

By | January 16, 2017

At some point of their life or another, anybody can find themselves in need of financial assistance. It could be for any reason; to pay school or college dues, for a medical emergency, or to simply have a meal after days of hunger.

The letter should have three basic parts; the first is where you describe how you intend to use the financial help, the second explains why you require financial assistance in the first place, and the third part is usually filled with wishes of goodwill and a thank you here and there. Usually people tend to describe their financial turmoil before they mention how they intend to use the funds, this repels readers, badly.

The letter should be concluded in three or four paragraphs, as to not lose the reader’s interest. It should be polite and have a professional tone, compelling enough to convince the recipient to help you, yet not make it seem as if one is begging. Here’s a sample to help you get started:

Ms. Deana B. Smith
Head of Finance
Berkline University

Dear Ms. Smith:

I am currently enrolled in a part-time bachelors program, which allows me 30 hours a week to work. I am able to pay half the tuition fee per semester with my current salary. I require assistance to be able to pay the other 50%.

I am unable to source that 50%, as my father has retired, and is living off his pension. Together with what he can spare, and my current job, these are the only sources of income I have at my disposal, and they are insufficient for me to stay in university and complete my degree program. I would be eternally grateful if you could help me in this time of hardship.

After completing the program, I will no longer require any further assistance. This is a one-time request.

I intend to and plan to pay back as any conscientious human being would their student loans, and I’m happy to discuss the payback plan. I will call your assistant within the week for an appointment at your convenience.

Meanwhile, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (000) 854-8547. I will provide you all financial information you require to make your decision.

Thank you for reading this letter and for the time you take considering it.

Sincerely,

(Signature)
