A letter of invitation to a friend or family member (who lives outside Canada), does not guarantee that a visa will be granted. In fact, it is the requirement of the visa office that must be abided by. Through a letter of invitation, a visa officer assess your status in Canada, your financial stability and the information about the person you invite.
There are some rules that must be followed when you write a letter of invitation to a friend or a family member. The letter is solely written for the purpose of a visit visa which means limited time in Canada. You are certainly not legally responsible for the person whom you are inviting but you must make sure that the person will leave Canada after intended visit duration.
Typically, Canadian visa officials require that you include complete information of the person you are inviting. This includes their full name, date of birth, contact information, your relationship to the visitor and the purpose of the trip. You should also include how long your friend or family member intends to stay in Canada and how they will handle their living expenses here. As far as your own information is concerned, you should include your full name, information on where your work, date of birth, contact information and status. You will need to provide copies of all documents that endorse this information as well.
