Deadline orientation is something that all employers look for in an employee. If we can meet the deadlines given to us, we are usually considered great employees. And most of us do strive to meet our deadlines. However, we may not be able to do so every single time. Not being able to meet a deadline is not really reflective of our incompetency. Sometimes, circumstances – usually unforeseen ones – do not let us finish our work on time. In such a case, it is best to ask for an extension, instead of hurrying things along and messing up the work.
Requesting for a deadline extension can be done through a letter. Remember that the people who have given you a deadline in the first place, probably have some cushion as far as delivery time is concerned. So it might not be a problem to extend your deadline. However, you will need to provide appropriate reasons of why you were not able to finish the project within the given timelines – your reasons will decide whether your extension can be made possible.
In your letter to request a deadline extension, it is imperative that you provide proof of what you have done so far, and how long exactly you need to complete the rest. The following sample letter of request to extend a project deadline will be useful when you sit down to write your own:

Mr. Jeff Nelson
Project Director – The Green Earth Project

Dear Mr. Nelson:
I am writing to request a 15 day extension for the submittal of The Green Earth Project. All project modules that you outlined are complete (please refer to the enclosed status report) and the only one that hasn’t reached fruition, requires an extra few days for my team to look through and include in the main project.
The reason for this delay is the fact that we could not procure information from one of the countries that is prime to this project. Due to the ongoing civil war within that country, our representative Ms. Sarah Parker has been unable to gather and sort the information that is crucial to this project. She has assured me that things will quieten in a few days and she will be able to do the needful.
In view of these considerations, I request that The Green Earth Project timeline be extended to October 15, 2016, instead of October 1, 2016. I apologize for any inconvenience that this change may cause, and appreciate your understanding and support in this regard.
Sincerely,
(Signature)
Anthony Garcia
