Lease Termination Request Letter from Tenant

By | March 29, 2017

There could be many reasons for you to want to terminate your lease early. You may be in an awkward financial position and cannot afford a better or as good a place, you may have to move, or the rent may have been increased too much.

In most cases, it is recommended to write a letter to your landlord requesting to terminate your lease, as verbal communication is not a proof.

In the letter, you must state a valid reason and explanation for the termination of the lease. If you need the termination urgently, say you have to move right away for your new job or you have been fired and cannot afford the rent during the time between jobs, then try to bring the gravity of the situation across on your list so that the tenant may put it on his priority list.

Once you are certain the letter has been received, then little verbal reminders are encouraged as long as you do not come off as nagging. Here is a sample letter to assist you; it deals with the person unable to afford the rent after it was raised:

Sample Lease Termination Request Letter from Tenant

Flank Bale
Tenant, Apt # 321
54 West Street
Tampa, FL 25114

June 20, 2018

Mr. Nicholas Underwood
4862 Ethels Lane
Tampa, FL 33634

Dear Mr. Underwood:

This letter is to inform you that after you increased the rent, which as per our lease agreement you are allowed to do as per the new market rate, I have found myself to no longer afford the rent of apartment 321, 54 West Street,Tampa, FL.

Therefore I am writing this letter to request you to terminate our lease when the current lease will expire after two months, as I will not be able to pay the rent. Since there are only 2 months left before that happens, I am hoping you would give generous consideration to my request. I have already begun to look for a new apartment or suitable living place within my budget. If you have other places available near this one which is lower in rent, I would be glad to know, as I find your policies quite reasonable and agreeable.

If there is anything you need to discuss with me, I am more than happy to have a meeting about this. Please feel free to call me at (000) 854-9151.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

(Signature)
